We may aware of the famous IIM-A gentleman who started his own catering business after his MBA. Yes. The famous Sarath Babu hailing from Chennai. And all other things. He was widely covered by our media.
But there are a lot of SarathBabus. They have to bring under lime light. In our land we too have diamonds. For this, I decided to meet one VIBIN CHANDAR. I read a news item in a famous Tamil weekly, “Ananda Vikatan” about him. In that article his success story was elaborated.
His name is Vibin Chandar. He is studying M.Sc., Computer Science in R.V.S.College of Arts and Science, Sulur, Coimbatore . I went there.
At first sight he resembled like our irresponsible, mischievous nephew with childish face, rosy lips, chubby cheeks and careful body building physique. But I was surprised by the fact that he is an employer of more than 15 employees and having three offices. Yes. At the age of 22. While studying his final year M.Sc. I am not a technical person. He explained his business with all possible jargon. I gawped at him. My gawping continued throughout our conversation when he described his success stories from his school days.
He studied in a government primary school. Yes. Ladies and gentlemen. He studied in vernacular medium of instruction. Not in a so- called international school where we normally believe our children can get good education. Further he studied in Government Higher Secondary School , Sulur. Again in Tamil medium.
Suddenly I noticed a surgery mark in his right hand. “What is it”? During his school days he fell down from a bike. A stainless steel plate was inserted there. But he seemed to be a body builder? He admitted with shyness that he was a weight lifting player and he got university medal for the same. My God! How? To him, how means how.
Living with stainless steel plate he won university medals for weight lifting and power lifting. He played for Bharathiyar University in ball badminton. He played for his college in cricket and basket ball.
His father may be a wealthy landlord. And escalating real estate prices would boost their economic conditions. So all these might have happened. I asked another inevitable question. Your father? He is a bus conductor in Tamilnadu State Transport Corporation. Again I was stunned. Perhaps this is the only thing I did throughout our conversation. He studied in a government school. In Tamil medium. A normal middle class family. Even after this accident he worked heavily and achieved all these things.
Since his father is a government employee there would not be any financial problems, I thought myself. But the piercing truth is he started his earning even from his school days. He distributed advertisement notices in public places. He did some odd jobs including load man jobs. But all these hardcore jobs were changed during his college days. He worked in a call center when he studied B.Sc., Computer Science at R.V.S.College of Arts and Science, Sulur. I asked, “When did you sleep?”
He woke up at about 7 ‘o’ clock in the morning. For another one hour he worked out for weight lifting and all other lifting. From 9 to 2.30 P.M. he had to attend the classes. Again from 4 ‘o’ clock evening to next morning 2 ‘o’ clock he worked in a call center. What a hectic time schedule? It seems that he slept only 4 hours daily during college days.
Dear sirs and madam, for the last 3-4 years I have been watching our rural side students from various perspectives. They have their own problems. These problems can’t be understood by their urban peers. This Vibin Chandar is a rural side student when compared with students of Coimbatore or Chennai or Bangalore . He is an urban student when compared with students of Kalivelampatti or Veppangottai palayam. But both of them have some lessons to learn from his story.
How did he manage to learn English? This is the fundamental question always asked by our rural side students. He vividly explained. No new rules. The same answers. Speak. Read. Write. Listen. He never missed an opportunity to speak in English. Perhaps he grabbed the opportunity to speak with his college professors, co-students and wherever possible.
It will not be an exaggeration if we say he is multi-faceted personality. He is an orator in Tamil. He participated in many Tamil events. No doubt he won. Now he is being invited by surrounding colleges including engineering colleges to motivate students on entrepreneurial skills. He narrated many Tamil lyrics during our conversation. He already published 3 books- no need to say lyrics – in Tamil.
What about his future ambitions. Like many peers of him, Bill Gates may be a competitor for him. But he said with controlled humbleness that it would be enough if he becomes popular atleast in his neighborhood.
He is over sensitive when we speak about his friends’ support. College students are always college students.
What about his teachers.
During his Under Graduation, his Director Mr Francis Xavier Christopher (who is Director for School of Computer Studies-UG at present) has been a real motivator for him and has supported him a lot and surely deserves a word of appreciation. he fondly remembers his teacher.
Back to Vibin. His achievements were
widely published in famous magazines and newspapers. In “Puthiya Thalaimurai”, a famous Tamil weekly an article was published under the caption of “Mr. Thannambikkai” (Mr. Self-confidence). In Kalki, another famous Tamil weekly an article published under the caption of “Mr. Popular”. Apart from these his success stories were published in “Anandha Vikatan”, a famous Tamil weekly, “Dina Malar”, a Tamil daily, “the Indian Express” and “The Hindu”.
